Queen Creek Wash
Improvements
Queen
Creek, Arizona
Dibble designed the
improvements for 1.4 miles of the Queen Creek
Wash from Sossaman Road to Hawes Road. The
improvements included increasing the capacity
of the wash to safely convey the 100-year
storm runoff, providing an attractive and
environmentally supportive landscaped corridor,
and providing a multiuse trail for active
residents and equestrian enthusiasts.
We utilized a unique approach
to increasing the capacity of the wash for
this project. A typical approach to increase
the capacity of a wash is to simply enlarge
the flow area of the entire wash cross section
or increase the hydraulic capacity using smoother
materials such as concrete or stone linings.
The Queen Creek Wash project, however, limited
modification of the wash to the wash banks,
leaving the existing sandy bottom of the wash
undisturbed. This allowed much of the existing
vegetation and natural habitat to be saved
and remain in place.
