Site Infrastructure

University of Arizona Thomas W. Keating Bioresearch and Medical Research Building
Tucson, Arizona

Dibble provided the design for site elements for the Thomas W. Keating Bioresearch Building and the Medical Research Building, which share a site on the University of Arizona campus. These Construction Manager at Risk projects achieved occupancy in 2005. The projects included demolition of approximately 4 acres of existing University-owned buildings and associated utilities. The site was master-planned to accommodate the expansion of both buildings. A mass site grading plan was prepared for the site and the adjacent blocks to provide better site visibility and to account for approximately 8 feet of fall across the site. Concurrent design of an adjacent utility project that provides new service and a new utility tunnel to the buildings required extensive coordination. New utilities include domestic water, chilled water, compressed air/RO water, sewer, storm drain, natural gas, fiber optics, and underground electric.

Additionally, the design of the plaza/courtyard area near the buildings, and the hardscape and open space surrounding the buildings, is tied into and closely coordinates with the adjacent streetscape and open space. Vehicular traffic was removed from two adjacent streets to allow for pedestrian-bicycle malls. These projects provides the University with a valuable research and laboratory facilities, while establishing a major pedestrian corridor of peaceful courtyards and quality landscaped open spaces.
