Kristen Reed

Assistant Engineer and Ultimate Frisbee Champion

Do you have a hobby? Tell us about it.

I like to chase plastic, and as some say, play ultimate frisbee. No, it’s not the same as disc golf… When I’m not on the frisbee field, I love adventuring outdoors. Whether it’s walking around the local bird preserve or hiking to the bottom of the Grand Canyon, I love spending quality time in the sun – always sun screened up of course.

What is your chosen discipline (engineering, planning, surveying, etc)? Why do you love it?

Engineers have the opportunity to apply technical skills to benefit the general public. I take pleasure in knowing I can contribute to providing basic human rights of having access to clean water and sanitation. I am eager to develop my skills within the field to help serve as many people as possible.

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?

I would go to Lapland – they have more reindeer in the region than people, need I say more? If you need more convincing, it’s a region in Northern Europe encompassing parts of Finland, Sweden, Norway and Russia boasting an Arctic landscape with magical views of the Northern Lights, a strong cultural history of the Sami people who demonstrate a strong connection to the natural environment, and incredible engineering feats represented by the hotels constructed out of ice each Winter.

If you could write a book about your life, what would the title be and why?

A book about my life would be titled “Thank You, Next”. Life is a series of oscillating highs and lows, and all of these experiences have shaped me into who I am. There is no sense in dwelling in the past when there are always new opportunities knocking on the door. Life is about the journey, not the destination. There’s no sense is stressing over things in life that you can’t control, it’s not like you’ll get out of it alive.
